Project 2

Assignment 1

This week I decided to look through some of my old photography work from highschool as well as trips I have taken throughout my life. A lot of the first images were from my high school photography project, the quarantine journal, where we would have to explore outside spaces and submit what we found. The other photos are photos I took during trips all around the world and or frequented places like Grand Bend and Florida. I have fond memories of every place I took a photo, whether it was a trip of a life time or a place that warms the heart all of them have a sentimental value to me. While colour picking in Mapbox I found that for a majority of the photos I would try to have the water, roads, and green spaces contrast the most. Additionally, although very conventional I always tried to keep the water as close to blue as I could. I suppose in my mind keeping the water blue makes reading a map easier. The colours that I selected for each photo seem to tell a story or exude the emotion tied to the photo. For example my childhood home has low contrast colours that could represent how nostalgia feels faint while the photo of the clone troopers are vibrant and thrilling. The lecture content I tried to explore was how spaces could be used for story telling and what that may look like.

Mapbox Cartogram of the Cardinal. Photo of a Cardinal I took during Covid while on a walk around the trails back home in LaSalle. Mapbox Cartogram of my childhood home. This is a photo of my first House I lived in when I was first adopted by my parents. Mapbox Cartogram of a play area made by kids during Covid. This is a photo of the transition between the residential area and the walking trails. Where I live currently you can get to the walking trails trhough a small path in between two houses. During Covid I found this 'Secret' society while doing a photoshoot for my quarantine Journal. Mapbox Cartogram of the tapped up playground during the peak of Covid. This is a photo I took of the playground During the peak of Covid while I was completing my quarantine journal. Mapbox Cartogram of an apple at an Apple Orchard located in Leamington Ontario. This is a photo I took at Thiessen Orchards in Leamington Ontario. I have very fond memories of this day as I was taking photos for a photography project and spent quality time with my mother. Mapbox Cartogram of a private beach near Grand Bend. This is a photo I took one summer on the beach in Grand Bend during a sunset. My family have always visited Southcott Pines for some summers ever since my cousins and I were very young. Mapbox Cartogram of Montreal's Notre-Dame Basilica. Thia is a photo of inside the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal from when I went to Montreal for my grade 8 grad trip. Mapbox Cartogram of mountains near Banff in Calgary Alberta. This is a photo of the mountains near Banff from when my family and I went to Calgary, Alberta. We visited the downtown district in Banff and went to the Calgary stampede. Mapbox Cartogram of Central Florida specifically over the Walt Disney World Parks of Hollywood studios and EPCOT. Photo I took inside the ride Rise of the Resistance in Galxies Edge at Walt Disney World's Hollywood Studios. Mapbox Cartogram of Salisbury England. This is a photo I took at the stone henge on my very first European trip (2016). Mapbox Cartogram of the City of London England. This is a photo I took of the London Tower Bridge during my first European trip. This place was important to me as I always wanted to go to England and seeing places I've only visited digitally was amazing. I'll never forget how we packed shorts but had to stick to the one pair of pants we brought due to the weather being so cold in the middle of July. Mapbox Cartogram of Esplanadin Puisto in Finland. This is a photo I took of the statue of Johan Ludvig Runeberg in Helsinki Finland. I never thought I would ever go to Finland but my Dad had a work oportunity that let us visit for the March Break of 2019. This is a photo I took while walking home my first year of Interaction Design during the Spring. The warmth of the sunset brought me comfort while I was stressing out about coding and learning Java Script. Additionlly, due to lack of space I merged the Mapbox Cartogram and the photograph into one entry.

Assignment 2

For this assignment I tried my best to explore both the AR and laser cutting process. For the ar process I 3d modeled a version of an asset I may use and then imported it into Adobe Aero. I then exlored the different anchor points such as horizontal, vertical, and geolocation. Additionally, I reviewed how triggeres and actions worked which in my example I made the 3d modeled leaf spin. For Mapbox I utilized the monochromatic template and edited the visability of labels and changed the colours to see if I could utilize them for laser cutting. Finally, laser cutting must have an adobe illustrator file set up with very specific properties. For example, the red outline of the phone stand tells the laser to cut while the black outlines tell the laser to etch the picture. While laser cutting you must also ensure there is no fill and that the stoke weight is set to 0.01pt. After experimenting I'm still the most interested in laser cutting as I have never had the opportunity to before. I'm considering on pursuing my conept of family and how chosen family can be stronger than blood instead of a particular location. I exlored the concept of maps telling a story as well as the concept of architectural psychology. With mapbox I thought about using the map of a small town called Amherstburg as its a town my father and I drive through all the time. Its a place where my dad and I would have our deep conversations we dubbed 'ted talks'. Finally, I believed that architectural psychology, the study of interactions and interrelationship between people and their surroundings, would be the best tool to tell the story I wanted to pursue.

Laser cut file of the phone stand. Laser cut wooden phone stand. Leaf drawn by my father that was later digitized in Adobe Illustrator. Leaf drawn by my mother that was later digitized in Adobe Illustrator. Leaf drawn by my grandfather on my dad's that was later digitized in Adobe Illustrator. Leaf drawn by my grandmother on my dad's that was later digitized in Adobe Illustrator. Leaf drawn by my uncle on my dad's that was later digitized in Adobe Illustrator. Leaf drawn by my aunt on my dad's that was later digitized in Adobe Illustrator. Leaf drawn by my cousin on my dad's that was later digitized in Adobe Illustrator. Leaf drawn by my cousin on my dad's that was later digitized in Adobe Illustrator. Leaf drawn by my grandfather on my mom's that was later digitized in Adobe Illustrator. Leaf drawn by my grandmother on my mom's that was later digitized in Adobe Illustrator. Leaf drawn by my uncle on my mom's that was later digitized in Adobe Illustrator. Leaf drawn by my aunt on my mom's that was later digitized in Adobe Illustrator. Leaf drawn by my cousin my mom's that was later digitized in Adobe Illustrator. Leaf drawn by my cousin my mom's that was later digitized in Adobe Illustrator. Leaf drawn by my cousin my mom's that was later digitized in Adobe Illustrator. This is a leaf that I 3d modeled in cinema 4d based off of one of the drawings given to me by one of my family members. This is a ar test I conducted in Adobe Aero where I made the leaf slowly spin. This was a test on what it was like to use the geolocation anchor type to see how a geospatial ar scene would work. This is the Ambassador bridge located in Windsor Ontario right across from Detroit Michigan. This was an additional test on what it was like to use the geolocation anchor type to see how a geospatial ar scene would work. This is the walking trails located in my neighbourhood (LaSalle, ON) that links to other neighbourhoods. This is a map of Windsor I tried to stylize in mapbox for possible laser cutting. This is a map of amherstburg I tried to stylize in mapbox for possible laser cutting. Amherstburg is a town that my father and I like to crusie (1970 Chevrolet Nova) through as it is a charming town by the water. This was the first tree I cut in the laser lab. Unfortunatley, it snapped as it did not fully get cut through due to the significant use of the laser. This is the back of one of my laser cut leaves. Due to the significant usage of the laser the smoke produced can block the sensor thus ocassionally not completely cutting through the wood.

Spatial Workshop 1

  • Who did you work with for this workshop? I worked alone on this workshop.
  • For this workshop architectural psychology best fits my exloration of space as it involves the study of humans and their interations with their surroundings. All my photos were taken inside the shcool where people often interact with each other and or the fruniture inside the srrounding area. The commonality of all three spaces is the idustrial theme as there is a lot of exposed metal or wooden beams in the ceiling as well as the occasional exposed concrete. The main differences between the three spaces is how often each space is occupied some have high foot traffic while others have barely any. Finally, this exploration of spcae helps shape my exploration for project 2 as it made me think more about how people interact with space as well as with each other depending on their surroundings.

This is a photo of the pit near C wing and the learning commons. Many students use this transitional area to sit down, do work, talk with friends, or enjoy the extra sunlight. Due to its more uncomfortable nature most people do not sit here for long if at all.</li>
</ul>This is a photo of the lower half of the cafeteria where the couches can be rearranged to eat lunch and face the window. The people who utilize this space is often students who eat alone or would prefer a more confortable space to eat/study.</li>
</ul> This is a photo of the old starbucks located in G wing. Unfortunatley there is little to no foot traffic in this wing and nothing has replaced the empty stall.
          </ul>

Spatial Workshop 2

  • Who did you work with for this workshop? I worked on this workshop alone.
  • I believe keeping the pit an area to sit in the sunlight and engage with friends is the best use of this space. The other ideas listed would either cause too little or too much occupancy in the small area which could make it less enjoyable. The unknowns I believe would help resolve my design is to further survey if people would use the spot more or less before investing materials on construction. Additonally, If I were to redo this experience I would work with more people to see what they would come up with as well as think about how people would interact with this new space.

This is a photo of all ideas I had for a redesign of the pit and how the new space may be used. My main takeaway from this image is that I think we should keep this area moderatley the same but with more comfort and opportuinties for people to interact with one another.<li>
This is a photo of my final idea for the redesign of the pit. I want to have bar seating and high tables to encourage people to stay rather than leave in discomfort. The tables facing the walls would have charging outlets so students can stay and work on school porjects while also still being close to amenities such as Tim Hortons and the cafeteria. Fianlly, in the center of the pit I wanted to include lower seating for those who are uncomforatble or unable to sit in elevated chairs.</li>
This is a rendered photo of my 3d model I created in cinema 4d for the final design of the pit. It helps show what the space could look like before commiting to inestments of the space.<li>

Project 2

Final Project 2 Design

I exlored the relationship between family and its correlation with environmental symbols.
  • What project option did you select, why? I chose to laser cut for my final project as I have never laser cut something and was interested in creating something physical rahter than digital. Additionally, I was not as interested in the theme of conventional maps and points of data. One thing that helped inspire the conceptualization of my final project was what kind of story did we want to tell about a specific space. The concept of architectural psychology was a prevalent theme as it studies the interaction and interrelationship between people and their surroundings. I don't feel connected to a specific place so I thought of other ways I interacted with my surroundings which resulted in the theme of family. Although not connected by blood(roots) they're still my family (leaves) where I feel loved and safe (bond = tree). This photo summarizes my work beyond the previous assignments by putting all the elements together and how I have analyzed my own architectural psychology. I explored the conept of an heir and how chosen family can be stronger than blood. Additionally, to show the data points of my 'space' I comissioned each of my family memebers to draw a leaf and send me a photo so I could digitize it. I would add the leaves to my tree and frame the tree to represent how proud I am of my family. Frames are traditionally meant to display perfection thus to me my famiy's imperfections are a perfect reflection of who I am.
